Silk scarf size guide

How to choose the size of a silk scarf for women? What is the length of a scarf for men? Which silk square size to choose according to the use?

If you have these questions, this scarf and shawl size guide will help you see more clearly and make your choice.

Fibra Creativa offers a wide selection of ready-to-wear silk scarves and shawls, as well as the possibility to create your own custom silk scarves. We offer scarf shapes and sizes that correspond to the usual market sizes, plus some original models of our own creation.

The main families of scarves

To start, here are the main categories of scarves and shawls, whose different sizes we will detail below:

  • square scarves
  • elongated scarves, shawls, stoles, ribbon scarves (twilly)
  • circular scarves

We offer both scarves in classic dimensions, like the large 90×90 square, as well as men's scarf models, easy-to-wear formats like shawls, or original and contemporary models like the snood, a circular scarf interpreted in silk. In this guide, for each model, we indicate the standard size range on the market, as well as the exact dimension of our models.

The most common scarf sizes

Here is a graphic overview of dimensions of square scarves and elongated scarves or the most common shawls.

Scarf sizes

Beyond these dimensions, we also offer original formats, such as circular scarves, snoods, boleros, twillys, etc., detailed below. There are other uncommon formats on the market, such as triangular scarves.

Size guide for scarves squares

Fashions change, the classic silk square remains a must-have accessory, as popular today as yesterday.

The ability to transform a look with a simple fold or knot makes the square scarf an essential fashion accessory. The choice of fabric, pattern, size, and tying technique offers endless variations and possibilities to express one's style and personality. The square scarf remains a highly appreciated item for its versatility and elegance in wardrobes worldwide.

Silk square Size range Fibra Creativa size
Silk pocket square for men 30×30 cm -45×45 cm 32×32 cm or 45×45 cm
Small neck scarf square 45×45 cm -55×55 cm 45×45 cm
Medium classic silk square 65×65 cm-70×70 cm 68×68 cm
Large classic silk square 80×80 cm-100×100 cm 90×90 cm
Maxi silk square 110×110 cm-140×140 cm 120×120 cm or 135×135 cm

The classic medium and large squares are the most common among women's scarves. Typically feminine accessories, they are offered by the majority of major brands, with the venerable Hermès house having greatly contributed to their brand image.

Men generally wear the smaller sizes: the pocket square, of course, but also neck squares. More recently, fashion designers have included large squares for men in their collections, worn over the shoulder.

This chart is generally valid for squares made from materials other than silk, for example polyester or cotton. In wool, mostly large and maxi squares are found.

Fibra Creativa offers square silk scarves in several types of silk fabric and finishes.

Large silk square (90×90 cm)

Silk square 90x90 cm

Let's start with the classic of classics: the large 90x90 cm silk square. It allows for good coverage and the creation of many knots (for the more skilled). All fabrics suit it, from the sumptuous heavy drape of twill to the airy lightness of muslin.

The classic “Hermès scarf” is a 90×90 cm square made of silk twill and hand-rolled. However, the Hermès house offers various other sizes and shapes of scarves.

Medium silk square (68×68 cm)

Medium silk square 68x68 cm

Previous younger brother to which it bears a strong resemblance, but smaller, this scarf can be worn tied or not. Worn close to the neck, it goes around twice and is fastened with a knot. Very versatile, it can be made from various silk fabrics, and machine-hemmed or hand-rolled, depending on use and budget.

It is more economical than its bigger brother, for a good reason: it is significantly smaller. Although the dimensions seem quite similar at first glance (between 70 and 90 cm, there is little difference, right?), in fact, the large square is 75% bigger! Because it's the surface area that counts, not the length of one side!

Small silk square, neck scarf or hostess scarf (45×45 cm)

Small silk neck scarf

Its small size makes it a very fashionable accessory versatile. It can be worn around the neck, wrist, in the hair, or to customize bag handles.

Discreet and practical to wear, it adds a touch of whimsy without drawing too much attention. Made of machine-hemmed pongee silk, its low price makes it ideal as a promotional scarf or hostess scarf to add a touch of color to a uniform.

It can also be worn as a men's pocket square. Pocket squares also come in smaller sizes, 32×32 cm.

The silk maxi square

The silk maxi square is both a superb piece, a fashion statement, and a somewhat bulky accessory. Perfect for producing maximum effect, its large size allows it to be well wrapped for bundling up.

The airy silk muslin is most beautiful in this dimension. In twill or silk satin, the maxi square is a luxury scarf. In fact, most maxi squares available on the market are made of polyester or cotton voile.

Size guide for scarves, shawls, and stoles

The elongated scarf has many advantages: a contemporary look, and a easy to wear, versatile shape, which ties and wraps in various ways, according to desires, or not at all.

In the family of elongated scarves, which includes shawls and stoles, sizes are less standardized than those of squares. These scarves share a very stretched rectangular shape

Silk scarves, shawls, and stoles Size range Fibra Creativa size
Elongated scarf 30X 130 cm – 40×140 cm 32×136 cm
Scarf 40×170 cm – 50×200 cm 45×180 cm
Men's double-sided scarf 22×180 cm (double layer)
Stole 60×180 cm – 80×210 cm 68×180 cm or 68×207 cm
Stole-bolero 60×136 cm

The scarves and shawls in the first two rows of the grid are common on the market, and are of course present in our collections. Furthermore, Fibra Creativa offers these scarves to customize in several types of silk, with machine-stitched hems or hand-rolled edges, depending on the fabric.

Sometimes our clients request rectangular scarves with less elongated dimensions (for example 70x50cm), most often to reproduce an existing painting or illustration without altering its proportions. If technically feasible, since our scarves are printed on fabric rolls then cut and hemmed, the result is scarves with very unusual proportions and not really easy to wear.

Scarves and shawls are also common in other materials, including cotton or polyester. Natural wool is often used for warm winter scarves, sometimes finished with a fringe rather than a hem at both ends.

Double-layer scarves: double silk scarves, circular scarves (snoods), and ribbon scarves

In the vast world of scarves, there are also models with double layers of silk fabric, which we particularly like. These elongated and narrow models have the particularity that the front and back can carry different patterns, which opens up many possibilities in terms of design.

It is somewhat difficult to specify standard sizes for circular scarves: they are not very common and come in quite varied dimensions, from a simple neck wrap to a very large circular stole. Ribbon scarves, on the other hand, generally align more or less with Hermès' Twilly.

Circular scarves, ribbons Size range Fibra Creativa size
Men's silk scarf 22×180 cm (double layer fabric)
Circular scarf (snood) 22×180 cm (double layer and circular)
Ribbon scarf (twilly) 5×86 cm 6×94 cm (double layer, beveled ends)
Maxi twilly 20×200 cm 22×180 cm (double layer, beveled ends)

Men's double-sided silk scarf

Men's silk scarf with gray graphic print

For men, Fibra Creativa favors narrow and heavy silk scarves, and a natural silk fabric that is glossy without being too shiny. Printed on silk twill with a semi-matte look and heavy drape, these beautiful double-layer scarves are machine-stitched on the reverse side, turned inside out, and closed with invisible hand stitches by our specialized seamstresses. The print differs on the front and back, or is complementary, like the positive-negative print of the model below.

Double-sided scarf with beveled ends (aka "Maxi Twilly")

This model is similar to the previous one, except that the ends are finished with a bevel. This bigger brother of the Twilly is offered in a personalized version, in silk twill of course.

Ribbon scarf (aka "Twilly")

This mini scarf in the shape of a ribbon, called Twilly at Hermès, is a relatively new arrival on the market.

Silk twill ribbon scarf Twilly

As its name indicates, the original Hermès Twilly is made of silk twill. Under this brand name, there is a long and very narrow ribbon scarf, double thickness, finished with a bevel at both ends. It is used to accessorize a bag, worn as a belt or in the hair and more.

Fibra Creativa offers it in a personalized version of your designs. Its price is close to that of a neck square, while bringing an originality appreciated for gifts.

Silk snood or circular scarf

Silk snood circular scarf

If the snood calls to mind a winter item in chunky knit, at Fibra Creativa, it comes in a silk version. Of all our scarves, it is certainly one of our favorites: chic and contemporary, unisex, versatile and easy to wear.

Scarf stoles

These original models are halfway between a stole and a blouse. They have the rectangular shape of a large stole, and borrow from the blouse a seam that allows the arms to be slipped in. They can therefore be worn like a bolero or a poncho, or as a scarf.

Silk stole-boleros

Another of our favorites, the original stole-bolero. This stole in silk twill or heavy, glossy silk satin double use can be worn in two ways:

  • like a bolero by passing the hands through the “wrists”.
  • around the neck like a classic silk scarf

This very chic stole is the perfect accessory for summer parties or evenings, and resumes its role in the city as a scarf. Our collections include several models, and we also offer it as a customizable scarf.

Silk ponchos

The term "poncho" does not do justice to these beautiful and versatile silk accessories. They have the shape of a poncho and the way to wear them on the shoulders by slipping over the neck, but the natural printed silk gives them a very different look from the warm traditional wool ponchos.

We hope this guide will help you navigate the many shapes and sizes of scarves.
